GAP.12 Satellite Workshop: Climate Ethics Under Conditions of Increasing Non-Compliance, 12. September 2025; 09:00-18:30

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the workshop “Climate Ethics Under Conditions of Increasing Non-Compliance”! The workshop takes place as a “Satellite Workshop” right after GAP.12, the international congress of the Society for Analytic Philosophy, on September 12 at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany (https://gap12.de/).

We are facing a world that is both warmer and more polarized in its responses to climate change. In this workshop we want to ask how these developments affect ethical thinking in relation to climate change. We want to ask this question on two levels: first, how do climate duties and their distribution change in a world where anything close to consensus on the matter is increasingly unlikely and conflicts between parties derail any collaboration efforts? And, second, how should the way we are doing climate ethics change, if at all? Our workshop will be structured along a couple of hypotheses in response to these two questions. These hypotheses will be presented in the beginning and then discussed, elaborated upon, challenged etc. both by our three speakers and in the general discussion. We envision the workshop to lead to a common position paper on the future of climate ethics under conditions of increasing non-compliance.

Confirmed speakers:
Elizabeth Cripps (Edinburgh, author of ‘What Climate Justice Means’) Simon Caney (Warwick, author of the SEP article on ‘Climate Justice’) Clare Heyward (Tromsø, editor of ‘Climate Justice in a Non-Ideal World’)
